What the doctor will need from you

So there are no surprises. This is the usual list for this treatment.

Before you travel

Things to gather at home. Photographs of documents are fine — they do not need to be originals.

  • Your echocardiogram (echo), as recent as possible

The echo is what shows the valve — which one, how badly, repair or replace. It is the single document the heart team reads first, and the price of the operation follows it.

  • The cardiologist’s file: ECGs, catheter or angiogram reports

Valve surgery is planned around the whole heart, not one valve. If a catheterisation was done at home, its report saves repeating an invasive test.

  • Reports from any previous surgery or treatmentIf you have it

What was done before decides what can be done now. Photographs of the reports are fine.

  • A list of every medicine you take

Blood thinners, diabetes medicine and some supplements change how the operation is planned, and a few have to be paused beforehand.

After you arrive in Türkiye

The hospital does these. They are included in your package and usually take one morning.

  • A fresh echo by the surgical team

The surgeons measure the valve themselves before deciding repair versus replacement, and mechanical versus tissue. Expect this on the first morning.

  • Coronary angiography, if you have not had one recently

Standard before valve surgery past a certain age: if an artery also needs attention, it is treated in the same operation rather than a second one.

  • Blood tests

A blood count, clotting profile, blood sugar, and screening for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Standard before any operation, and usually done the morning you arrive.

  • Anaesthesia assessment

The anaesthetist meets you before the operation to check your heart, chest and medicines, and to agree the plan with the surgeon.

What the doctor will ask you

Worth thinking about before the consultation. Clear answers here save a day.

  • How far can you walk, and how many stairs, before you stop for breath?
  • Do your ankles swell? Do you wake at night short of breath?
  • Chest pain, palpitations, fainting — any of these?
  • When was the valve problem first found, and has it worsened?
  • Are you on blood thinners, and which ones?
  • Any dental problems? Infected teeth must be treated before valve surgery.

You do not have to do this alone

Every patient is different. Once the doctor has read your file they may ask for one or two more things before confirming your plan — that is normal, and it is a sign your case is being looked at properly rather than waved through. If it happens, we tell you exactly what is needed and why, and you will see it added to this list.

If you cannot get a test at home, tell us. Most of them can be done in Türkiye instead, and we will arrange it.
