What the doctor will need from you

So there are no surprises. This is the usual list for this treatment.

Before you travel

Things to gather at home. Photographs of documents are fine — they do not need to be originals.

  • Your height and current weight

These give your BMI, which is the first thing that decides whether surgery is the right answer and which operation suits you.

  • A list of every medicine you take

Blood thinners, diabetes medicine and some supplements change how the operation is planned, and a few have to be paused beforehand.

  • Reports for diabetes, blood pressure, reflux or sleep apnoeaIf you have it

These conditions change which operation is chosen, and several of them improve after it. The doctor wants a baseline.

  • Report from any previous weight-loss surgeryIf you have it

A second operation on a stomach that has already been operated on is a different, longer procedure. It has to be known in advance.

After you arrive in Türkiye

The hospital does these. They are included in your package and usually take one morning.

  • Full blood tests including vitamins

Blood count, sugar, kidney and liver function, clotting, plus vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron and calcium. Those last ones matter because they are what you will be monitored on for years afterwards.

  • Stomach camera (gastroscopy)

A thin camera looks inside the stomach, usually under light sedation. It finds ulcers, hernia or infection that would have to be treated first.

  • Ultrasound of the abdomen

Mainly to check the gallbladder and liver. Gallstones are common with excess weight and are sometimes dealt with in the same operation.

  • ECG, echocardiogram and chest X-ray

The heart and lungs are checked properly before an operation of this size.

  • Dietitian and psychologist consultations

Both are part of the standard pathway, not a judgement on you. The operation changes how you eat for the rest of your life, and these two visits are where that is explained.

  • Anaesthesia assessment

The anaesthetist meets you before the operation to check your heart, chest and medicines, and to agree the plan with the surgeon.

What the doctor will ask you

Worth thinking about before the consultation. Clear answers here save a day.

  • What is your weight now, and what is the most you have ever weighed?
  • How long have you been at this weight?
  • What have you tried already — diets, medication, exercise programmes?
  • Do you get heartburn or reflux, and how often?
  • Do you snore, or has anyone told you that you stop breathing in your sleep?
  • Do you have diabetes, high blood pressure or joint pain?
  • Have you had any operation on your abdomen before?
  • Are you planning a pregnancy in the next eighteen months?
  • Do you smoke?

You do not have to do this alone

Every patient is different. Once the doctor has read your file they may ask for one or two more things before confirming your plan — that is normal, and it is a sign your case is being looked at properly rather than waved through. If it happens, we tell you exactly what is needed and why, and you will see it added to this list.

If you cannot get a test at home, tell us. Most of them can be done in Türkiye instead, and we will arrange it.
